Standardized Child Passenger Safety Certification Training

A 32-hour or 24-hour (instructor discretion) course taught through a combination of lectures, role playing and hands-on practice with child safety seats and vehicle belt systems. The curriculum is framed within a “Learn, Practice, Explain” paradigm so that upon successful completion and certification, an individual will be equipped to explain installation procedures to parents and caregivers, and empower them to confidently install and re-install child restraints as needed.

Written exams, hands-on skill evaluations and participation in a child safety seat checkup event are required for certification. This is a physically demanding course that will require students to climb in and out of cars, apply weight into child restraints and manually adjust seat belts.

The minimum age requirement for CPS certification is 18 at the time the course starts.  Age 18 is the national age of majority; 18-year-olds are legally accountable for actions and are likely to have experience as a driver. Any individual who is under the age of 18 and attends a course will not be certified, and any certification granted under false pretenses will be immediately revoked.

Prospective students should have a keen interest in promoting child passenger safety and be available to serve as a CPS resource person for their organization. Participating in this program will enhance your organization’s credibility in traffic safety. Properly restraining children and adults saves lives and reduces injuries.

Directions to the UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation:

Driving directions from either I-40 East or West:

Take the 129 (Alcoa Highway) exit (386B). Travel south on 129 – approximately one mile to the UT Medical Center/Cherokee Trail exit. Follow the exit onto the medical center campus.

Driving directions from the airport:

Take the Knoxville exit from the airport. This will take you to Alcoa Highway (north 129). Travel on Alcoa highway (north 129) for approximately 10 miles and exit right at the medical center/Cherokee Trail exit. The Marine Corps Armory is on left just before you exit right.

Arriving at UTMC:

Go straight through the traffic light at the end of the ramp (do not turn on to Cherokee Trail) and enter the UT Medical Center grounds (pass the brick UT Medical Center sign). Take the first right turning in front of the Cancer Institute – do not pass the Cancer Institute.  Go under an overpass walkway and take the next right to enter the parking garages (will go through an automatic gate arm).

The road will dead end and you will have to turn right or left – TURN RIGHT going towards the garages under the building. Go to level “G2” or garage level 2 and enter that level.   Look to your right as you enter the garage and you will see our sign “UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation” on the wall and “UT Medical Simulation Center” on an orange awning over the door in the middle of that wall. You can park on the same G2 level of the garage – if you can find a space. Otherwise you can go to the level above (G1) or below (G3) and take the elevator back to G2. There are usually open spots on G3.

Enter through the door with the orange awning and turn right past the reception desk – enter through the door marked “Medical Simulation Center”.

Coming by bus:

If you are coming by bus – follow all directions above through turning in front of the Cancer Institute. Instead of going under the overpass walkway – pull over directly under the overpass outside of the G1 entrance into the parking garage. (There is a pull over area there for trucks/buses). UTCAMS staff will arrange to meet you at that entrance and bring you down to the Simulation Center. If you have any questions call 305-9219 or 305-4626.
